What’s Behind Temperature Fluctuations Inside My Cincinnati Home?

Temperature fluctuations can cause great discomfort, making it hard to keep your Cincinnati home heated how you’d like. There are several issues which can occur in the home that may be causing temperatures to make unwanted shifts — below are a few causes that are commonly to blame!

1. Dampers aren’t working properly

Your heating and cooling systems may use dampers, especially if you have zoning components installed. While dampers are meant to improve temperature control, when they aren’t working properly, they can cause temperatures to fluctuate. If the damper is stuck in the closed or open position, it will cause the system to become unbalanced and prevent effective control of comfort in the home.

2. Vents in the home are covered

Your home’s heating and air system was designed with a specific amount of vents in order to allow the right amount of air to move through the system. If vents become covered, the areas those covered vents serve won’t receive the expected amount of conditioned air. Carpets, furniture, and other household items can block vents, preventing effective temperature control.

3. Ducts are leaking

Duct leaks allow conditioned air to exit the duct system before it can reach the living areas it was intended for. Unconditioned air can also enter through holes and disconnections in the ducts, worsening temperature fluctuations.

4. Drafts around windows and doors

Gaps around door frames and windows throughout the home cause cool, outside air to enter the home, creating temperature fluctuations. Doors and windows that do not fit snugly in their frames or close entirely will not only let cool air in, but allow warm, indoor air out, further reducing your ability to control the temperatures inside.

5. Insulation is lacking

Insulation helps your home hold heat inside during the winter. If there isn’t enough insulation in certain areas, or areas are uninsulated, you’ll experience more temperature fluctuations because your home isn’t able to properly hold in the heat produced by your furnace, boiler, or heat pump.
