With the kids at home and summer break in full swing many homeowners will start departing for summer vacations. As you prepare for your trip, you should also think about preparing your house for when you’re away. With our NEST Learning thermostat you can ensure your residential space is saving you energy and money while you are away. In this article we will discuss two different options for saving using your NEST thermostat while you are on vacation.

NEST Can Control Your Home, so You Don’t Have To

The NEST Learning Thermostat automatically learns to save energy when you enter and leave your house daily. However, when going on a more long-term absence from your home such as a vacation, we recommend two strategies to save money and energy while you are away. If you are going on vacation this summer, we recommend looking in to our two NEST thermostat approaches for more energy and money saving.

Make Use of Eco-Friendly Temperatures

Your NEST thermostat knows when someone is home and when you are away. By knowing this information NEST sets your home automatically to eco-friendly temperatures. However, you can also manually do so to help save even more. While doing so it still will keep your home reasonably comfortable for when you do return. This way you save but it won’t take long to get back to your preferred temperature once you have returned. When using this setting there are some things you should keep in mind.

Let’s say your NEST automatically is on eco mode and your neighbor is watching your house. If they enter it will start adjusting your house to your preferred temperature by either heating or cooling it depending on the time of year. When they leave it will go back to ecofriendly temperatures, but it won’t save as much energy if you do it manually. However, if you do manually set your thermostat to eco-friendly, then you must make sure that you manually turn it off once you return from your vacation. Both options have their ups and downs, but regardless both save you money and energy while you are away.

Turning Your Thermostat Off

NEST can help you maximize your energy and money saving by completely turning it off when you are gone for longer periods. By turning it to the off mode you can save even more energy than if you were to only set it to Eco Mode. Saving extra money comes at a small cost. With this option your home will take longer to get to your preferred temperature.

By utilizing either feature you are sure to save while you are gone on vacation. Here at Nelson Comfort we recommend using either option, you can’t go wrong. We are here to help you save energy and money with our NEST thermostat. Call today if you have more questions or are interested in having a NEST thermostat installed.
