An air conditioner that suddenly stops is a problem no Cincinnati home or business owner wants to face mid-summer. There’s a list of issues which could cause your AC to stop without warning – in some cases, a tripped circuit breaker is to blame.

While your lack of cooling can be easily fixed by resetting the breaker, you’ll need to get the bottom of the issue at hand – why is your air conditioner tripping the breaker? Below are some cooling system problems which may be causing your circuit breakers to repeatedly trip.

Filthy Condenser Coils

Your air conditioner’s condenser coils are located in the exterior condensing unit of your cooling system. They work to make heat exchange possible by expelling heat, carried from your home through the system’s refrigerant lines. As air passes over the condenser coils, particles can easily be deposited on their surface. As dirt and other contaminants build up, the coils don’t have the necessary surface area available to expel heat; this causes your air conditioner to overwork to get the job done, drawing more electricity than normal, which may trip your circuit breakers.

Solution: Our NATE-certified technicians can perform coil cleaning to remove grime from the coils, using system-safe chemical cleaning solutions.

A Hard-Starting Compressor

When the system’s compressor is hard-starting, it needs excessive electricity to overpower pressure from the cooling cycle initiation. The increased electricity draw from the compressor may cause a circuit breaker trip.

Solution: Repair technicians may install a hard-start kit which provides the additional electricity the compressor needs when it fires up.

A Short in a Motor

Your air conditioner has motors which operate the system’s compressor and fans. Motors can overheat for numerous reasons, but when they do, it may cause wiring insulation to melt. When the motor shorts out, circuit breakers are tripped to stop potential electrical fires.

Solution: Our air conditioner repair technicians will replace your bad motor with a new one.
