Too often, homeowners and even business owners are preyed upon by dishonest people disguised as service contractors – even heating and cooling contractors. Whether they swoop in after a devastating storm or go door-to-door on a weekday afternoon, their goal is to take advantage rather than help you out, as they claim. Avoid being caught in an HVAC contractor scam by doing business with a company you know and trust.
Don’t allow strange HVAC contractors inside
A “contractor” going door to door, offering to inspect your heating and cooling systems is a tactic used by HVAC contractor scammers in the past. In these cases, the person may not be a contractor at all – such a story allows them to gain entry to a home or business, where they can plan for a future break-in, or even steal items during this visit.
Even an actual HVAC contractor who shows up at your door uninvited may not have your best interests in mind. Their “free inspections” will likely turn up an extensive and expensive list of work that they claim must be done right away; work you may not actually need, ad/or that they may not be qualified to perform.
Instead of doing business with a random HVAC contractor who may turn out not to be a contractor after all, it’s in your best interest to do business with an established, reputable company in your area.
